Short and violent, but sincere.

I picked up this collection of wry, naturalistic short stories in a numbered edition from a great little independent books-and-records store in Benson. They are all pretty downbeat with a touch of noir in the telling. Possibly the best scene involves a three-quarter Native American narrator using menstrual blood as 'warpaint' in the bedroom - if that doesn't put you off, maybe you should try it.

edit: I mean try the book. I'm not going to give you any advice on what to do in the bedroom, and certainly not that.
