Nice story, good characters, and just the right length.

I think it's because I've been reading more adult fiction, but this fell just a little flat for me. Not enough burn for the love story, or something.

But definitely a lovely and charming YA novel.

This is now my comfort book even tho it is prolly not meant as a comfort book. Loved the interactions with Annika and Lennox. Even tho half of the time they hated each other. Loved to see them fall for each other. Got cringy at some parts but idc this book is LOVE

the selection series is one of my biggest guilty pleasure reads, so it's really not a shock that i enjoyed this.

i do think this is slightly more grown up than the selection; the worldbuilding and politics are better developed and the characters are more fleshed out and complex. however, there were still definitely some cliches that mirrored the selection at times.

my biggest complaint with this book is shockingly the enemies to lovers romance. LET ME EXPLAIN, because enemies to lovers is my all time favorite trope. the two characters began as sworn enemies with lennox having murdered annika's mom, and almost instantly fell in love after a few chapters of forced proximity. there wasn't much buildup, and it felt like you snapped your fingers and suddenly they had gotten together. there was admittedly some complexity in the ideas of forgiveness, growth, and selflessness that their relationship explored as the story continued, so i'll give it credit for that.

overall, this was very sweet and a lot of fun to read!

Honestly I was fairly excited for this, but this is pretty meh. I am let down again, but after the betrothed I have learned not to get my hopes up. I adore Cass's writing and find her characters compelling but lately the plot lines have felt pretty bland. I just want there to be more to the story.
