This was an accidental read for me; although I have always wanted to read something by this author before but haven't ever got round to it.
I really liked the premise as soon as I read about it and it absolutely didn't disappoint. I'm not someone that gives five stars out frequently and even rarer for me to give one to a thriller; it's such an irritating trait of my neurodivergent brain that I can't just enjoy a thriller without second guessing everything, I did do that with this book also but the author had so many twists and turns that it didn't matter.
I really enjoyed the split narrative and the two different parts of the book and for a rare occurance I did actually like most of the characters.
I will say the major reveal of what was going on and who was involved totally blindsided me, which does not happen often; I actually shot up in the bed. 😄 The last twist I did guess but didn't leave it any less enjoyable.
I am absolutely going to be getting something else by this author, sooner rather than later.

i enjoyed the twists in this one. it struck the right balance with its clever red herrings: kept you guessing but didn’t make you feel frustrated that you’ve been lead up the garden path. i enjoyed the feeling that no one was safe and no one was above suspicion either.
I am still thinking about this book weeks later. I loved the setting, the character development, and placement of the narrator change. Man, this book was good.
I love a good retelling of Turn of the Screw, which is how this book started out. I’m a sucker for gothic romance and this story fit nicely. The storytelling was rich and delicious, also well planned all the way to the end. I had so many working theories of suspects in my mind all the way to the second it was revealed and it was still a surprise, which I loved. I especially appreciated what I thought to be a plot hole turned out to be yet another twist in the end.
This. One. Trudged. Along. Half way through I figured out who it was, before the end it was spelled out. Not all that exciting, not all that thrilling.
I felt the mystery was woven very well between the past and the present. Kept me intrigued until the end!
I feel like I’m in a bit of a reading slump lately; this book should’ve gripped me more but I struggled through it.
I can’t say whether I would’ve liked it more pre-slump but the whole plot-line and general atmosphere is something I usually would be more excited by.

The job sounded perfect to Una Richardson. To be the live-in companion and caretaker to Elspeth McKenzie, a wealthy, elderly woman living in a beautiful Victorian mansion in Bristol, England. The pay was much more than she’d ever earned. Once she gets the job, she bonds with her employer. Except Elspeth’s middle-aged daughter Kathryn would have preferred to be the one to care for her mother and doesn’t hide her feelings about the young, pretty Una. As Una gets settled, she finds out that there are more than a few secrets being hidden in this creepy house. Including the fact that the woman Una replaced left without a trace. And another previous companion died tragically. Una sets out to learn the truth.
Author Claire Douglas has created a highly entertaining, atmospheric thriller filled with lots of suspense. The McKenzie house is aptly named The Cuckoo’s Nest and there are many people who could be behind the mysterious fates of the young, attractive caretakers. The story is told from several characters’ perspectives and will keep you guessing throughout.
Just Like the Other Girls was previously released in the U.K. and is now making its debut in the U.S.
Rated 3.75 stars.

This was a deliciously creepy read. The setting alone – an elderly woman who lives alone in a huge, empty mansion hiding a multitude of family secrets – is thoroughly eerie and ripe for plot twists. The story is fast-paced and the characters keep you guessing throughout the novel. Definitely one of the more creative premises for a thriller I've seen recently.
Thought it kind of drug on, a lot of back and forth. And I found it to be repetitive but it also goes along with the story. Good twist
