Another perfect beautiful book by Queen Barbara. I genuinely cannot get enough of this woman’s writing. I loved the found family, community and sense of place in this book. Also, in the acknowledgements Kingsolver references This Changes Everythjng by Naomi Klein as an influence, a book I also just finished! Feels fitting.

I cried when this was over because I didn’t want to end. This is rare for me (thankfully, or else I’d be an emotional wreck

Two stories about families living in the same house 150 years apart. Kinda preachy about recycling and reusing. As well as pushes evolution.

Kingsolver is a master storyteller and I love both the large and small literary flourishes and the fascinating topics she chose for this work and her others. I often feel like 'the point' is oversimplified though and it baffles me that an author who is so good at character nuance can be middling at overall nuance. I love her though and I'm fully there for her next attempt. I can't wait actually.

Unsheltered gives her another opportunity to call us out on our wasteful ways as humans who seem hell-bent on destroying the planet (and each other). But with graceful artistry and humor, she mostly succeeds in helping us make important connections between how we tend to live and the costs of continuing to go down that path.
