The beginning of the book might leave you a little breathless, but I promise you, in the end, it all comes together perfectly. Mr. Leonard has seen to that very well. This book debunks a lot of conventional BS wisdom and does a wonderful job at it, you are presented with valid arguments and asked to judge the situation yourself.
Don't let yourself be fooled though (see what I did there?) by the small size of this book. It is filled with knowledge bombs at every twist and turn and I highly recommend that you have a pen and paper by your side as you read it.

All in all, this was a wonderful read. I will surely apply all these tips and wisdoms to my own hobbies and I'm sure I will be able to benefit from them.

Solid 4.5 / 5.0. (Listened via Audible)

A great, short, and straight to the point book. It conveys the idea of mastery and it's an achievement.

Surprisingly, the author is not as extreme in his ideas as most self-help books of this age (1991).

Speaking of ideas, that's mostly what you're going to get with this book. There is a chapter towards the end of the book that talks about achieving mastery and a checklist but it's more how to change your mindset and apply it to everyday situations than actual practical steps you can follow.

The last chapter goes through a set of physical exercises that help connect with your body. I haven't tried them yet but I will once I get a paperback.

That's not to say the book is bad. On the contrary - it's a must-read!

Defines mastery and what it means to transcend being good or even great at something, and to become a master. One I will be coming back to for a long time

Really good, impactful book. Willing to be the fool/beginner accelerates learning. Many good lessons.

I guess I shouldn't be too hard on the author, because of the time it was written. Though saying that, I'm only saying it with a guess that studies into all this "positive thinking" and "telling people your goals" bullshit were not yet done, results not yet known about.

I enjoyed the book for the most part, there were some sections I found insightful. for example the section on the universal trait of residence to change.

Re-read this 3 years later (2021) and still deserves its 5-star rating. George Leonard wastes no time on fluff and anecdotes which plague so many books today where authors do their best to release a book filled with as little information as possible and as many "relatable" stories as they can.

In summary, a short information packed book that focuses on gaining real traction with a chosen skill and which approaches it from an almost zen-like philosophy. Short, sweet and impactful.
