It's 3:30am and I've just finished this book, right on time for my 11am class that's entirely about it. Interesting story, I feel that knowing more about Icelandic culture/myths/sagas would've made me appreciate it more, but there were still some useful footnotes to provide better understanding. I also really enjoyed the portrayals of women in this.

Brilliant - though flagged a little before the end. I found myself a bit discombobulated by the change of scene from Reykjavik to the North.

This is basically why I don't trust books based on any blurb. Sure it sounds interesting, but how can you tell if the author executes it well, or if the prose or translation are up to scratch?

The Atom Station suffers from many of the same problems as I saw in They Shoot Horses, Don't They—namely the conflict between satire and seriousness, and the weakness of both those elements individually. The book improves in the latter half, but mainly in the sense of being spurred forward half-heartedly every few pages by the odd interesting thought or passage—only to lose its way again amid the dated references and sometimely blunt satire. I certainly didn't feel an ongoing compulsion to persist with it, but I got there in the end.

Mér fannst þessi bók sæmileg en ekki jafn góð og hinar bækurnar sem ég hef lesið eftir Halldór. Hluturinn sem hún Ugla verður ólétt fannst mér mjög óþægilegir að lesa. Mér finnst að hann Halldór hafi ákveðið hvað boðskapurinn væri áður en hann byrjaði með persónurnar og það gerir það þannig að boðskapurinn stýrir sögunni og ekki sagan sem stýrir boðskapinum.
