They could have made this book great. An amazing, epic tale of how the cats first came to the forest. Instead, they made it a love story between a loner and a Tribe cat. What? Who the crap picked this up for that? I wanted to see some fierce battles(like the guide book says there were), epic deaths, and general chaos all around. Instead we already have two Clans - oh wait, they're not Clans. I mean, they don't call themselves that. But really, what makes a Clan? A group of cats supporting each other and watching their boundaries. That's exactly what we get in these books.

What happened to every cat for himself? And that there was so much turmoil that the dead cats had to step in and force these cats to become five*cough*four*cough* Clans?

(Slight spoiler, around page 50.) And what a lame way to get Gray Wing to go to the forest. Find the kitten that ran away and go with it? How about, drag that misbehaving little brat back home? And why is this cat a better hunter than his full grown brother? It was cool when Gray Wing for in trouble the first time and had to get him out of it, but come on, after that it was just overkill.

I had high hopes for these books. The fourth series wasn't that good, but I figured a fresh start with a new cast would maybe make things better. Instead we have everything we've ever had: forbidden romances, small but not major border skirmishes, and loved cats dying. Good job, Erin Hunter.

Edit; I re-read it, and I liked it more this time around. I think the key is to sit down and read it all the way through, because I actually ended up caring a little about the cats this time. I'm bumping my review from 2 stars to 3 cause I guess it's okay. I think the next few will probably be better.

Turtle Tail is the best cat

- ok so this is the start of the new Clans, meaning I already know how this ends so it makes me really impatient to get it on with
- not a single character except Gray’s Wing & Turtle Tail (maybe Jagged Peak) has a good consistent characterization and it drives me crazy
- i just want Wind and Thunder to become leaders, and i’m assuming Tall Shadow will be shadowclan and clouded sky will become skyclan if that already exists in this timeframe, but idk where river is

I chose this book to read because I felt nostalgic. I read one of the other series as a kid or teen. This was a lot more heartbreaking than I expected. It's definitely a great story, but had me sobbing multiple times. I loved it.

It was great to see the connections and beginning of the clans.

Most of this book is just their journey to the new place, but things keep happening which keeps it somewhat interesting. Gray Wing (who I keep wanting to call Gray Stripe) is so dense it almost hurts. I almost forgot how much I hated Clear Sky. And that bonus content at the end about Petal and Fox did not make me any more sympathetic towards them.
