Not a big fan of this book. The narrator is very good. I don’t know why it didn’t connect with me. I could tell which doll was going to become eerie from the beginning as soon as it was mentioned. I thought there would be magic or something bigger tied to the stories that the kids play together and act out. I felt like it was built up about his characters he pretended to be and then the story shifted to the doll/queen and returning her. The doll was creepy enough to make for a spooky story. I’m not even going to Google whether the story of bone China is true or it will creep me out.
3.5 stars. Pretty creepy, particularly for someone that is creeped out by any porcelain doll, anywhere. I love these characters, but could have dealt with a bit more depth. Loved the mystery of the story, though, and I'm inclined to believe she was real. ;) Good read.
This was a good book, but I expected more scares. It was not as scary as I thought, and it was sort of childish in some places.
3.5* ... Now, I will be the first to say middle grade is not for me, I just really struggle to get lost in the simplistic writing style or the short length of the stories. However, this is the second Holly Black book I've read and I just like her writing and the creepy elements to her stories and this book was no exception! Doll's have always creeped me out since I was a kid and this woman used to babysit me who collected them so I could vividly picture the type of doll this story was about. I loved that the book had illustrations and I loved the friendship and journey between Alice, Poppy and Zach. They all grew so much as people throughout this book and it was so lovely to watch. I definitely want to read all the books by Holly Black!
No book has been recommended to me as often as Doll Bones as of late. It mostly deserves the praise it gets as a somewhat creepy, otherwise fun adventure with some kids who go a bit too deep into a ghost story, but the real strength is more about the growing maturity of the three kids as they cope with adult expectations and the trials and tribulations of growing up.
It's a pretty quick read, and has a lot of appeal for kids and adults alike, I believe. Definitely check this one out.

When I was a kid, I used to get excited about books and try to make my mom read all the ones I liked until one day she was like "... I don't want to read all your books, I want to read my own."
Now I get it.
Now I get it.
I really enjoyed this coming of age story with a ghostly twist. I thought that it began a little slow, but was soon fully invested in the adventure.
