For: fans of bears or silly books.

Possible red flags: grumpy Bruce being grumpy.

HAHAHA. Bruce is seriously the best grumpy bear ever. In this beginning reader, fans of the Bruce books will recognize Nibbs (the woodland creature), the geese, and of course Bruce. Bruce doesn't like Mondays....or picnics....or swimming....or fancy dinners. But the book does end positively. Just read.

Only thing I will say. I struggle with this being a level 1 beginning reader. When I read level 1, I think sight words. However, this publisher classifies as simple text and word repetition which Bruce's Big Fun Day does have. So maybe it isn't too much of a stretch? Advanced beginning readers would be able to do this without a problem....I think.

Another Great Story!!!

This is such a cute story and the pictures really bring it to life. Perfect for beginners and those learning English as a second language.

I am really excited for this book and I'm hoping it will be a series. Bruce is coming to early readers in this early chapter book. If young readers know the character of Bruce, they know that fun and Bruce don't usually go together! Each chapter takes us through the day in which Bruce and his rodent friend, Nibs, enjoy the outdoors together. Nibs has planned a fun-filled day for Bruce, although you know what that means! It of course doesn't go as planned, which leaves Bruce extra grumpy... or is he?

Nibbs, the mouse, wants Bruce to have a fun day, but Bruce doesn’t seem to be having any fun at all. Breakfast in bed turns into a messy disaster. The long walk is exhausting. A picnic turns into a feast for the ants. The boat ride is wet, particularly when Nibbs uses Bruce himself as the boat. They do make it back home in time for supper, but supper is too dainty and fancy for Bruce and dessert is even worse. By the time they are in bed, Bruce is very, very grumpy. Which is really nice, since Bruce loves to be grumpy. It might have been the perfect day out after all.

Higgins cleverly turns his picture book series about Mother Bruce into an easy reader format. His use of limited vocabulary is done seamlessly with the story. It helps that there is zany action on many of the pages that can be explained in Higgins’ rather dry tone in just a few words. The illustrations help too. Done in full color and with Higgins’ signature style, they show the story playing out on the page with great clarity and additional moments of silliness.

A great addition to easy reader shelves, this one is big fun. Appropriate for ages 4-7.
