what a sweet summer read this was!

ydhas has every element of a cute sports coming-of-age. while it didn't exceed my expectations, it certainly met them, and that is what it had to do. there were a couple of rubs here and there with the prose where i thought it would lose its timeliness. the "evil is defeated" type of gen z jokes that are very of-the-time might be out of touch within a year, but i brushed it away. the relationships were cute, the jokes funny, the arguments were nice if a bit on the nose at times. my favorite part was leticia and her round character.

i'd recommend this to very young teens as an introduction to literature for sure.

This was such a sweet read oh my god!!
Even though I don’t really like football I played as a goalie for almost 2 years on my schools team, I just lost passion for it and for a while I felt guilty for quitting a sport I was so good at just because it wasn’t making me happy, I wasn’t enjoying it at all. Years have passed since then and now I hardly even remember the rules of soccer however the guilt never left, This book however made such an impact in me, made me realize a sport or a hobby is supposed to make you feel alive, feel like you are part of something and most importantly make you so happy that you want to do it all over again. I felt very connected to Vale’s story and even though she was very far from perfect I absolutely adored her, was she an absolutely messy and sometimes mean character? yeah but I think you can see her growth through the book in such a way that even though she changes, she never loses her spark. As for the plot a bit predictable but still interesting and the love story was also super sweet and a really good rivals to lovers.

Trigger warnings: death, cancer, injuries, grief, emotional abuse, homophobia and xenophobia (both challenged)

YOU DON’T HAVE A SHOT follows Vale Castillo-Green, a passionate soccer player whose season ends because of a fight she instigates on the field. In an effort to escape the oppressive and judgmental energy of her home, she escapes with her friends to their childhood soccer camp. But when the stakes rise and a chance for redemption is near, her partnership with her arch nemesis could ruin everything. Desperate times call for desperate measures, but will Vale open up her mind, and her heart, enough to make the most of the summer?

I’ve been struggling recently with the YA contemporary I’ve picked up, but this book restored my faith. Authentic, powerful, emotional; everything I look for in this genre. The plot is both fun and intense. I really connected with Vale as a character; her drive to be perfect because of the expectations placed on her hit so close to home, making her journey throughout the book so much more meaningful to me. The romance was subtle and slow until it wasn’t and I was obsessedddd. Cannot praise this book enough. Highly recommend!
