And so ends the first ARC in the Higurashi series with a gruesome conclusion! As I read the book I started to know where this one is going, my memories are coming back. And I was hyped, but also a bit creeped out as I knew that once Keiichi walks this path.. there is no way back. I loved how well the paranoia and the insanity was written. How Keiichi totally went south, but with him also Rena and Mion. We see how those two constantly know all about Keiichi and what he does, and most importantly that he speaks and consults with someone he should definitely not talk. Not at all. With each passing page, each passing day, things got more and more crazy and I knew it wasn't long before the bloodshed would start. I felt sorry for Keiichi as he was having such a good time in this town, and then he finds out all those things. He just wanted to be with his friends. To feel safe and happy. I felt sorry for his parents who had no idea.
The ending, holy hell. I knew what was coming but it still comes to a shock to me each time (and with that I also mean the anime). For answers we will have to wait until the Answer arcs start. We only get snippets and hints.
I am still unsure about the art, I have to say at times it was at least better than the first volume. The creepy eyes are still very unsettling, but again also a bit silly.
I cannot wait to start the next arc in this series. Cotton drifting.

The next part in the series and this time the gore happens. This time the prelude is over and people start dying. AND OMG dying they do. Keiichi finds out all sorts of more things about the town and about the Sonozaki's. About Mion, but also about Shion. It was quite interesting to read, though at times there was just SO MUCH dialogue that I got a bit tired of it all, I noticed that my head and eyes just started wandering (and they already do that a lot, but here it is even more). It was still exciting to read, but I was just eager for things to really get exciting. For Mion/Shion to just snap. The last part of the book is OMG and then there is the ending that just is the cherry on the cake. I totally forgot that happened in there. That was scary.
I did feel sorry for everyone involved and everyone surrounding them.
The message of this arc is clearly that one should be honest, don't judge based on appearances (the doll and how Keiichi didn't give it to Mion which is why she went totally south) and also to just put heavier locks on everything.

I was planning on writing a longer review, but all I want is curl up and sleep at the moment. Sleep.

Re-read 2021! It is time for Spooktober and time for a new batch of re-reads for this series. Last year I read up to 4, this year I am going to read another 4. Very excited!
In this one Keiichi has been around for a bit and returns back to the village. We see him discover new things about the village (including of course the dam incident), about fun places but also some not so fun places. It was really fun to read and I love that in this arc Keichii is mostly used to village life. In the beginning it is pretty quiet, but when things get revealed things slowly escalate until the last chapter. Be warned what you say about the syndrome or Satoshi-kun.
I loved Satoko in this one. She was adorable and I love her pranks. Such a shame her character was completely ruined in Gou/Sotsu.

A new arc and new characters! Well, the cast in Hinamizawa is mostly the same just years and years younger, no Keichii or Rena. In this arc we follow a detective named Akasaka and boy I was so happy to see him again! I remember that I really liked this arc, yes the art is different and yes the story is not entirely the same, but there are enough hints to the normal Higurashi. The threats, the crazy eyes, the warnings. This is just the introduction because I remember that the next volume will go full on. Brakes are off.
OK, I was creeped out how Akasaka reacted when he first saw Rika. Imagining her in swimsuits... hoping she would call him papa. WTF dude, she is like 5? Just no.

The second and last volume in the Time Killing Arc and things are getting scary and gory! We see how Akasaka and Ooishi are fully going for it to get the kid back from the kidnappers, we see how Rika tries to prevent Akasaka from finding out a horrifying truth, and there is so much more. This one was just wow. We also read about Rika's prophecies and my heart broke. Because yes, Rika knows. Rika knows what is going to happen. A little girl shouldn't have that burden.
My heart broke for Akasaka, in more than one way, because he learns about the warnings. But in the later parts also why Rika was telling him all these warnings and prophecies. I can imagine how he just broke down. How he knew he had to do something, even if it was too late, he had to find out things.
It was great to see his little kid, though of course also sad.
All in all, this was great! Sad, scary, gory, but great to read. The art was a bit weird though.

It is time for a new Arc in the Higurashi series, this time to Cotton Drifting Arc.

I just love re-reading Higurashi again, and this time during Halloween. Just perfection! In this one the stage is being set for the big finale and action and horror in the next one. We get clear hints something is wrong with strange eyes, strange behaviour and other things. We see that things aren’t always so cute and sweet in this town and its neighbouring town (which I loved to see again).

We also learn about Mion’s sister, Shion. Yes, I was so hyped that this Arc is about the twins. I had quite a lot of fun seeing how Keiichi got confused and how he didn’t believe Shion was Shion until he also met Mion. That moment just had me in stitches. Now he had to believe. But then still the question remains… who is the to say Shion is Shion and who is the say Mion is Mion?

Higurashi keeps getting better and better. A lot of things are revealed in this volume and we also get a good peek at the families of Rika and Satoko. I was really happy to see something of Rika's family, though I was sad it had to end like that. Pretty gruesome too. *shivers*

Hanyu turns human in this volume and acts like she is new to the school. I really liked that, since I loved the Hanyu character. How much she tries to do for Rika and how she does her best to get through the whole reset happening, and how she copes with the deaths she keeps seeing in each world.

Also we get some more information about Keichi, and how he got to live in Hinamizawa. Still curious how his dad could see both Rika and Hanyu when he went to visit the lot where the house will be. How could he see Hanyu? By magic of a miracle?

We also see the quite fast descent to scary, murderous lady for Miyo and how she does everything to get what the hell she wants.

The ending was a nice twist. I still remember that part from the anime, so it wasn't a total surprise for me.

Still I can't wait for the next 2 volumes. I am really excited as to how it will end (will it be the same as the anime?).

Another new volume/arc in the Higurashi series... well new. Not really since the OVA for this series came out in 2009. An arc I really loved as it shows yet another world in the Higurashi world.

This one is all about Rika. Yes the cute and also dangerous girl (since we know how powerful she is). She was too happy, too careless and at the start of the book got into an accident because of her carelessness. She finds herself at a new world. A world where her friends are happy, a world where there is no sin, a world still filled with her parents. A world without pain. But is it all that good?

I loved that we got more back story on the parents, it was really interesting to see them in here, considering in most arcs they are dead. Died in 1981 and leaving Rika alone. But as we can see in this arc, Rika turned away from her parents often, especially when she learned they will die. We find out that Rika doesn't like her mom, or her dad. Her mom is overly hysteric and her dad doesn't mind doling out punishments if she did something wrong.
However you can see that Rika's mom is just trying to care for her in her way. And we also see that it isn't always the mom's fault, but also is based on Rika's attitude. I really loved seeing the realisation and that Rika and her mom are being happy together.

Of course, as is expected, there can't be a good ending in this one. Hanyu tells her that to get out of the world she has to make a choice. She has to find a fragment (and it can be in a person) and that Rika has to destroy/kill/burn said fragment so it can be free and so Rika can go back. This puts Rika in a difficult position. At times she would have said she doesn't mind killing a person, but what if everything is turning out to be a happy event with said person? Rika must make a choice and while I was worried and at times disgusted (can't anything in Higurashi just go well for once?), I was also cheering and loving the fact Rika had to choose.

I won't spoil the end, but I am really wondering if what has happened was real or not. Hanyu says some things, but as we know with the world of Higurashi, nothing is what it seems.

The art seems to falter a bit in this one. Faces that look a bit off, bodies that seem not human and some other things.

I know we still have some Arcs waiting to be picked up and translated and I hope Yenpress will get to them soon, I don't want the world of Higurashi to end yet.

So finally we get to the story/background of one of the biggest antagonists of this series; Miyo.

I can somehow imagine how someone like her, turns out to be so evil and bad.
SpoilerFirst she loses her family (in a gruesome accident), then gets sent to an orphanage, where all kids are abused (horrifically) and then she has a bit of brightness when she gets picked up by her grandfather. But even there it isn't always light and fun.

So yeah, this one had some (Higurashi is known for it's gruesome images) very disturbing images.
SpoilerKids being pecked to death, kids in lockers are put under the shower, kids are beaten, hung above the toilet to clean it up with their mouth. Also the images from the train accident, were pretty gruesome. So beware!

In overall, I would have to say it was a great book, it gave lots of information about Miyo, why she is doing what she is doing now. And I really can't wait for the next volume.
