In The Last Dodo, the Doctor and Martha stumble upon a museum filled with the last of each species (Mr. "Last of the Time Lords" should have said uh-oh right there), and I was surprised at how fun it was. Jacqueline Rayner's other New Series novels have been, quite frankly, complete rubbish. Annoying pop culture descriptions, strained coincidences and stupid plots. In this one, I find the Rayner I liked from the Doctor Who audios: Having a bit of fun with the format and producing a quality romp! Stylistically, it's a bit all over the place, but I think it's what makes it enjoyable, with the point of view shifting from omniscient to Martha's LiveSpace page (or something) to the dodo's pov to the I-Spyder book filled with biological detail on the species encountered.

Good voice for both Martha and the Doctor, nice plot and interesting twists. One of the best Doctor Who books so far.

I kind of expected a more childish book but I found that it was deeply emotional and touched on many important themes. I really enjoyed this book and the writing was really good. Enjoyed the plot twist, characters, in their silly and emotional moments.
I could not even make it past the first chapter of this book. The writing style did not feel right and the inner monologue for Martha did not sound like how she would talk. Maybe I will look for the audio book and see if I can get through it that way.
Can't get this one through my interlibrary system, so I may be waiting quite awhile to read it.
Update: Audiobook was available! Supposedly abridged but the closest I can get for now.

I really wish this had been one of the episodes. It works so well with all the elements of the series worked in; there were so many moments I could see happening in the show. Definitely worth the read for any long time fans of the series. Especially loved the 'interactive' pages that where throughout.
The twists that Rayner puts in can be difficult to follow at times, but it is worth it when they all come together at the end.
I couldn't give it 5 stars though because sometimes the the Doctor and/or Martha seemed out of character in comparison to the series, which could be distracting at times.
