The darkest of the elements books thus far, well written and paced - I can’t decipher if my rating is a reflection on the book itself, or just how icky, angry and sad it made me feel.

The third installment of the Elements series. It follows the story of Freya, a burns doctor, through flashbacks to her childhood and her current life. Within this, John Boyne questions what makes people do the things they do - nature vs nuture. Freya's a key example of this. She was an unwanted child who experienced rape and trauma who grew up to be an adult who seeks out vulnerable young boys to sexually assault to (what she believes) stop them ruining their lives and others. It was particularly tough to read details of her experiences of rape as a child and her methodical sexual assaults on young boys.
Like with the other installments in the series, Fire symbolises her job as a lead doctor on a burns unit, the fire she started as a child in the house where her mother and her two abuses lay, and her burning the evidence of her rape of Aaron.
I love the links between the books in the series - Rebecca being Willow's daughter from Water and Freya being a jury member from Earth.
One a side note, I find it interesting that Freya found Evan and Robbie not guilty of rape when she's both the victim and a perpetrator of secual assault and rape.
