A fun romp of an old-school regency. I do wish the mother’s storyline had been handled better.

Annabelle Peyton is in dire states, she needs to marry for money to save her family since her father died. The problem is everyone knows about her situation and is waiting for the time when she becomes more than desperate to hope for marriage. Simon hunt, a self-made man, wants Annabelle for himself to but he isn't interested in marriage either.

I loved seeing the relationship develop between Annabelle, Lillian, Evangeline and daisy. They were a funny group of friends (especially when playing Rounders) and I liked the camaraderie that formed between them.

I also liked how Simon navigated everything behind the scenes. He really cared a lot longer than even he knew.

3.5/5 stars!

Secrets of a Summer Night was not as good as the Devil in Winter in my opinion. But I still love Lisa Kleypas’s writing style. After I finished the third book I knew I had to read the Wallflower series right from the very beginning. I love all the Wallflowers and the romance is so swoonworthy and the plot is so engaging.

Out of the other Wallflower books I would say the romance in this book is probably not as appealing as the others. Also Annabelle is probably the least interesting wallflower. I don’t want to be mean but her whole personality is that she is beautiful and doesn’t have a dowry and unfortunately that’s it. I like Simon Hunt as the love interest he was the typical scoundrel type guys in books that I love.

But I have to admit they’re romance didn’t really seem to spur me on as much as Evie and St. Vincent. Not that I think they lacked chemistry I just don’t find the romance that enticing. Him proposing for her to just be his mistress and he doesn’t want to marry her because she poor doesn’t exactly scream romance to me. Also I found the last 100 pages of the book could of honestly been condensed into 50 as I felt that they got together so quickly it felt that the book could of easily ended at page 250.

Even though I defiantly didn’t enjoy everything about this book the writing style was so enticing and the wallflowers were in this book throughout unlike in the third book. I liked their friendship and they’re plotting I felt that was actually some of the best parts of the book was the plotting and the in-depth plot of Annabelle and having no money and having to support her family.

I’m really excited for the second book with Lillian ‘It Happened One Autumn’ as I know exactly who the love interest is going to be and oh it’s going to be so interesting to see how it pans out!

Sigh.

I thought me and Lisa Kleypas were in a good place. I loved, I mean loved the [b: Mine Till Midnight|693016|Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, #1)|Lisa Kleypas|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1380326170s/693016.jpg|679345]HATHWAY SISTERS Series. Every book was a delight and I think it might have been one of my favourite series in 2017. I earlier than this read: [b: Dreaming of You|330721|Dreaming of You (The Gamblers, #2)|Lisa Kleypas|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1443223862s/330721.jpg|679378] and had a strong aversion to its pathetic treatment of our female MC. and the poor writing of the chauvinistic male MC. So Its been a mixed bag.

This... this brought me back to a mixed place. I detested Annabelle. I strongly dislike money grabbing, poorly written female Mcs in historical romances. Annabelle is shallow, self-entitled, position desirous, cold-hearted, and a capitalist. She truly believes she is better than the male MC even when she marries him. The money conversations/obsession was such an issue for me as a reader.
The money issue aside and that characters main motivation throughout the novel there was moments of comedy ( rounders).I liked all the other wallflowers ( Lillian the least even if she is book two MC)Evie was delightful. I liked Simon, why he put up with Annabelle and her attitude I have no idea. But there was moments of real romance that I swooned at. It was also nice to see where this fitted into the wider novels. Simon and A are in the Hathway sisters book two and the hotel they stay at is Harrys from book three.

Will I read book two? I'm not sure. I'm not sure that LK writing was strong enough to support me in the future novels. 3 stars

Annabelle and Simon, somewhat divided by class, experience romantic conflict during London’s Victorian husband-hunting season.

I don’t often read romance novels per se, but this author (and series) was recommended to me. I found it unexpectedly enjoyable and loved all the non-romantic historical and social themes too.
