Hard to express my thankfulness for this book and its author. It is a truly unique take on discipleship/discipline. You'll be left with a hunger for the word, prayer, fellowship, etc. like you'd expect a book on discipleship to leave you - yet unlike most, you be drawn there by a gospel magnet, not by white-knuckled duty. Jared finds a way of delivering you into the grace-filled joys of these Christian actions through beholding Jesus not just commands to obey.

If you're a tired Christian who wants to be nearer to Jesus, read this book.
If you're an excited Christian with much zeal, read this book.
If you're not a Christian and wonder why others would bother, read this book.
Actually, just read this book.

this book was excellent.
it gave me a lot of things to think about and reminded me of the grace I have in Jesus.
definitely a new favourite!!

“Discipleship for normal people” - this is who (or is it whom?) the author states he wrote this book for and for the most part, I think he succeeded.

The Good:
1. The content was understandable, void of lofty theological terminology
2. The examples and personal anecdotes were appropriate and helped emphasize his points well
3. Within each chapter were plenty of discussion points to jump off to if doing a group study
4. Loved Mr. Wilson’s description of the Gospel that opened each chapter

The Average
1. The style of writing took some getting used to. The book is written in conversational English and although intentional and appropriate, still an adjustment
2. As the author points out in the introduction to his book, there are many books on discipleship out there, did we need yet another? For me, this question was left unanswered
3. Upon finishing I find this less a book on discipleship ship and more a book on simply living life as a Christian. Perhaps this is more semantics but there seemed to be very little in the way of practical things one should do as a disciple and much more of a focus on encouraging believers as we navigate through a messy sea called life. (Not a bad thing, just not what I was expecting in a book on discipleship)

Overall an easy enjoyable book to read that stimulated good conversation in our group which was what we wanted and why it received four stars.

When I ran across Jared C. Wilson's latest release, The Imperfect Disciple, I knew immediately that this was a book I needed to read. "Grace for People Who Can't Get Their Act Together," the subtitle boasts. Yeah...might as well have titled it, "The Stuff that Jesus Has Been Trying to Tell Lex for A Long While Now."
Living in light of the gospel is often messy because we are broken people trying to work out the reconciliation we've been given with God—the holy creator of the universe! As Wilson describes it, our relationship with Jesus is like bringing home a fiancé who is "a much better catch than anybody, including yourself, ever thought you’d end up with." (Seriously, this is his writing style. I laughed often while reading—couldn't hold it in!)
Wilson writes with a straight-to-the-point style that is at turns both humorous and heart-wrenchingly honest. Reading this book was like having a late-night talk over beers with a friend who pulls no punches. I loved this book. Perfect for anyone trying to reconcile their faith when they cannot get their act together.
