I didn’t like the writing style and also nothing particularly interested me enough to continue.

What a wee gem of a book!
It took me a wee while to get into this at first, but I read another review from someone who said you really need to "lean in" to the nonsencial parts, which is absolutely true. When I starting embracing these aspects and the silliness and jokes throughout I was just hooked. Really as soon as the group went to Florence I was sold! The descriptions of the settings and the food and conversation and characters was just so beautiful and inviting.
The characters are so well fleshed out and their relationships such a joy to witness and I was really rooting for all of them. The addition of the Florence floods was heartbreaking but so well touched on, and was a great plot device to use to bring the characters all back together in harmony.
I also really enjoyed the artist/artwork references and to where they were all hidden during the war, though at some points I did feel it was a bit of intellectually snobby and could leave the reader feeling excluded.
Really enjoyed this reading experience though and will be on the lookout for more Sarah Winman!

One of the best books I have ever read, all the generations so well written. I laughed and cried it was just amazingly beautiful! I would recommend it to everybody.
Do prepare it is a long book with a lot of extensive description and character building and that makes it harder to read sometimes but it is worth it I promise. Also for the people who prefer short chapters, this book is 400 pages long but only has 5 chapters.
