Inspiring and educational, this book should be read by everyone.
I only wish it were longer. I feel like I know just the main events in Salva’s life, and I wish some parts weren’t as rushed.

What a fascinating story on a time period and country I knew absolutely nothing about. This book has definitely peaked my interest into learning more about this topic. I was skeptical at first, because I was not sure that Linda Sue Park should be the one writing this story (and honestly I'm still not sure that she is), but she definitely did a lot of research and since Salva is a close personal friend to her, it didn't feel icky.

Written for children 10 years and older, this is a beautifully written story for all ages. It would be an especially good book to read for upper elementary and middle school students -- Park teaches much about the history and culture of Sudan, and the story provides many topics for discussion.

This was a captivating story based on life in southern Sudan. It's very informative yet entertaining. I think the age level is supposed to be for 10-13 year-olds. It's not insanely explicit, but it is difficult to read about the realities of hardships that come with traveling far distances with no water.

We follow two perspectives.

A girl in 2008 who's 11 trying to get water to her family. The walk is crazy, she has to make this trek first thing in the morning and back by noon to feed and return water to her family, and then make the long trek again the second half of the day. It's a large portion of her life she's doing this.

A boy in 1985, who's also 11, that is sitting in class when the rebels attack southern Sudan. His village isn't safe to run to, so he is forced into the brush and makes a painstaking journey.

This is all based on a true story and meant to provide awareness of the struggles and war in Sudan. Salva, who's story this is based on, went on to found an organization called Water for South Sudan which has created many wells.

This book only took me about two hours to read, but it was an amazing one. I appreciate hearing about the hardships these people had to overcome and learning that people are providing for them actively. It will definitely inspire young readers to seek out further education and want to provide for other people in different places.

I first listened to the book in 4th grade when it was the read aloud for the time. I stumbled across this book next when I was in 6th grade, because of me being about 2 years older I can understand the struggle the Lost Boys has to go through. I wish there was more detail in some part, but I understand as this being based on a true story you would probably want it to be as accurate as possible. The fact the story’s combined into the end made me melt. This story was incredible and moving for me. The only reason I give this book 4 stars is because I wanted more detail, but really if I could I would give it 4.5 instead of just plain 4.
