A heart-rending story of a young boy's survival during the Second Sudan Civil War. And to learn that this was based on Salva's real experiences is so sad. There are some very tough depictions of violence and death, but a heartpounding account of survival. A great read for middle grade. Can be pared with When Stars Are Scattered or I Will Always Write Back.

Struggles of two African children impacted by the lack of clean water access in southern Sudan. It alternates between their perspectives 20 years apart. The setting during one time period is a long trek to refugee camps trying to escape war.

Great- based on a true story tale about The Lost Boys of Sudan, life struggling to find & collect water every day, surviving in a war torn country & the struggles of a conflict filled country in turmoil. A very inspiring & hopeful tale, too.

listened to first half on audiobook & read second half! will be teaching this this year as it’s in our curriculum. has many emotional, traumatic, and devastating incidents for the main character (based on a real person) but overall hopeful at the end.
