As a teen I read this book and just saw the personal side. As an adult I read it and see the mystical and spiritual side. Love this book.
The fact that it is set in Appalachia and I can see and appreciate the folklore and belief systems presented doesn't hurt either.

This book has been on my reading stack for years...not sure how it got there because it's definitely not my kind of book. Let's just put it this way...if you liked/loved "The Shack", you will really enjoy this book. It's most definitely heavy duty Christian fiction...I was expecting more heavy duty historical fiction. Not being Christian, I got a bit drowsy in the more dogmatic sections...the many dogmatic sections. That being said, it was not a bad book...strong writing, good character development, interesting story with some low level mystery thrown in to keep you hooked.

Appalachian story, kind of fantasy, awesome story. One of the best stories I've ever read.

I like most of the books I've ready by Francine Rivers. This one had some surprising twists that really grabbed my attention.

First Sentence...
"THE FIRST TIME I SAW THE SIN EATER WAS THE NIGHT
Granny Forbes was carried to her grave."

That night when Cadi first laid eyes on the Sin Eater would forever change her. Cadi - a 10 year old girl, living in the Great Smoky Mountains in the 1850's - was carrying a great burden. She was leading a life with guilt. Cadi was weighed down with grief...with burden... she felt as if she was doomed. She was very much afraid of God because of her feelings of guilt. Seeing the Sin Eater for the first time set Cadi on a mission. A mission to seek the Sin Eater, unload her guilt and be forgiven.

This book blew me away! I listened to the story without having a clue what it was about. I just knew it'd been around for years.

I'd never heard of the idea of a sin eater and wasn't sure how this would pan out to give God the glory, but WOW, did it ever. I know this story preaches hard, strong, and in your face, but it's done in such a way, that I didn't feel like I was being preached at. I felt like the characters in the story were getting the brunt of it. Which of course, spills over into the reader absorbing it as well.

The people who live in this Appalachian setting have been living life according to rules they set up for themselves. The thought of someone taking on another's sin aside from Jesus is just mind boggling, but I can see how it could happen through the eyes of these people.

This story is so well crafted and to see it through the eyes of the children is incredibly powerful. I never thought I could learn such a powerful lesson from a 10yr old and her curiosity. Her deep desire to understand the Truth propels her and her community into opening old wounds they were all happy to put to rest.

I'll tell you what, you could cut the tension with a knife pretty much from start to finish. The pain pretty much every character carries is palpable whenever they're on the page. The Truth is spoken and it divides us all to the marrow. You can see how it happens in this story that is so beautifully and expertly told! This is a do not miss book!!

I liked the historical aspect of the story and of course it had a good message.

Strange and pointless.
