It’s a nice little vampire novella set in West Virginia with two short stories with little tie ins to With Teeth. Quick read and entertaining.

Vampire novella with two short stories that tie in. All good stuff.
Firstly I love the cover.
The start of the book was very entertaining and funny and I loved how it tied in with the end.
The characters had depth and a good detailed build up for a novella.
The story had excellent pace and was enjoyable all the way through.
My only small issue was that the introduction built up the expectation that this would be a very different take on a vampire story but in honestly it was very much the same as the old vampire tales with the beasts having the same strengths and weaknesses etc.
This did not trouble me too much as I love a classic run of the mill vampire tale.
I enjoyed the Afterword and realised I need to dig deeper into the authors previous works. He seems like an author I can get on board with as I am a sucker for a multiverse.

This was a fun little novella. Lots of action and gore, but also a ton of info dump at the start and a lot of background on the eight (8!!!) characters we follow in this book. Characters we don't follow for very long at all. Maybe I would have enjoyed this more as a full novel? Because literally half of this novella was getting to know the characters and the sparse bit that was left undid all the hard work my brain did trying to remember who was who. Fantastic ending though - really flipped the script on me.
Vampires are more like sharks than what you see in the media.
This is the story of seven adult, West Virginian, redneck men (a friend group) who wander onto an inhospitable area of property in search of a place to cook meth (for good reasons) and instead find vampires.
The vampires are monstrous (yay!), the characters are unexpectedly complex (hurrah!), the strain within the friend group is believable as are the motives (amazing!), and the action is fast (perfection!).
This book appeared in a booktuber list and, seeing it on Kindle Unlimited, I took a chance despite the individual aspects of the story not being my usual go tos.
It's a short book so it's not a lot of investment if you're curious. The action happens fast. There's enough character building that I do care about the individuals, and the ending works well with the narrative style.
Would recommend for people who want their monsters to be monstrous, someone looking for a quick horror fix, and anyone who wants to see some relatable roughnecks responding to a vampire infestation.

A unique take on vampires that (nearly) completely throws away all preconceived ideas about what makes a vampire. It reminded me a lot of the film The Descent, sprinkled with some Stephen King-esque small town vibes.
This novella is fantastic. It was so immersive, even for its short length. The characters were flawed, yet interesting and likeable. The ending and outcome for the protagonist, Frank, was superb. It definitely was my favourite part of the story.
I think these vampires can be symbolic of many themes and ideas. My take on it was mainly concerned with the idea of time. Being stuck in time, like a vampire, can be beneficial to some, while others have the opposite experience.
I totally felt called out when Frank stated that vampires don't listen to Type O Negative or look like Christopher Lee.

I really didn't like the start.
Over explaining character backstories when very few of them have more than one sentence beforethey die horrifically is a waste of this novella's limited space.
Having said that, once it got going I was hooked! The lore is interesting, the action is good and the ending is just the best.
I wanted a whole extra story forthe remaining characters.
