Joe Bonham is the leper messiah for the common man. He is the voice of many generations. He has been crucified for democracy, but he is not the only one.
These themes are conveyed so expertly by Trumbo that I found myself lost in the book more than once. As I put this down I am angry, I am sad, I am human. I am beyond enraged that our society would continue to send men to die for their own selfish wants, and this anger comes with complete sadness on behalf of the voiceless. Trumbo is right, no one asks them once they're dead if it was worth it. How could it be? Ultimately, this book shines light on many great political on idealogical beliefs, but in the end I was most thankful for the simple humility it brought me. It broke me down and rebuilt me with a new perspective.

A classic anti-war novel of a young man who loses almost everything.
"They died with only one thought in their minds and that was I want to live I want to live I want to live."
There is not a single language spoken in this world containing the words befitting of this book. "Johnny Got His Gun" is a punch to the gut. Heart-wrenching, hopeless and tragic. It's been over three months since I have read this book, and this evening I picked it up again and flipped through its pages. It physically hurts to read this – the sentences I underlined are powerful, they break my heart over and over again. Trumbo doesn't hold back, he gives you the whole truth, the whole extent of harm humans inflict but also suffer. You don't get a single second of relief, just as the many dead men didn't get a single further day to live a life, to start a life, to build a life. People died in trenches, people died in hospitals, people died years after a treaty was signed. People died and died and died. Even now, they still die. For ideas none of us can really grasp. Because when it comes down to it, they are just ideas. A life, however, is a life. It is supposed to be full of happiness and sadness, anger, hurt, laughter, silliness, individuality, connections, sunny days and rainy days, a first pet, a first kiss, a first love, mistakes, regrets and ambitions. All the happy little moments you get to enjoy, all the sad little moments you get to overcome. To take this away from a whole generation of young men, to take it away from young people even now. To know that war has never achieved a single thing of value and still wage it. Unfathomable — I cannot stand this.
This is not a book. This is the bombshell blowing apart your arms and legs and half of your face. This leaves you reeling and will never let you go even for a single second. "Johnny Got His Gun" will stay with you forever.
