Easily one of the most powerful books I've ever read. The fact that it was published two days after war was declared in Europe (signaling the start of WW2) is almost painfully ironic. A very memorable book, I'll be thinking about and processing its message for quite a while.

Wow just wow. Read this! Such a sad tale of war, and really makes you contemplate what it means to be "fighting for your country".

This book will turn you into a war-hating Commie. On the bad side, even as agitprop it's a bit one-dimensional.

And after the years men are still sexist...
His struggle was horrible, lonely, and agonizing.
He continues on by living through flashbacks and dreams.
Once when a nurse walked off or what have you, he screamed inside his head that she was a slut.
Another time he belittled the women no longer "in" his life because they were sex workers, or didn't fit his standards of Christian ideals ("nice" girls, but gave it up before marriage)
He dreams of horrid things like drowning, of rats eating his body...
It truly is terrible what war does to people and how much they must suffer, but do you need to be a jerk?
Please, that's rhetorical.
Could have been shorter - The Last Day of a Condemned Man is shorter and does just as good if not better describing inner thoughts.
Worth a read, both of them.
I listened to this as an audio book w headphones, I think that helped get the mood of the book to really stick. Like someone screaming in their head.

My god this book. Probably in my forever Top 5. It took me a little while to really get into it but when it clicked, I was gone.
It’s devastating in such a casual and yet very descriptive way, that it blew me away. And I cried and I suffered for this boy and it is by far one of the most moving books I’ve ever read. And I’d love to be able to say more but I’m just lost in words. This book is just amazing.
