An incredibly important read that I don't think I will ever forget. It is heavy, it is devastating, at times it feels both vile and beautiful, it is breath-taking. It makes you consider childhood and the things we are raised to believe, the history we are taught. More than just war, it makes you consider love, betrayal, anger, bitterness, hopelessness, hope, joy, work, relationships. It makes you consider media, propaganda, censorship, deeply ingrained cultural and ideological lies, and how we might be able to begin deconstructing them. As I've read this, it has followed me throughout each day, remaining in my mind. Even though it was tough to read, I want it to continue replaying in my mind. There is a reason this novel was embraced so adamantly during the Vietnam war. Probably everyone should read this.

When your blood runs hot for war, taste a little of this reminder.
Being trapped in my own head is my biggest fear.
Being trapped in my own head is my biggest fear.
This was a book with perspective like no other. My heart sank for Joe and his situation. Being in his head with his thoughts, feelings and memories was a roller coaster. This book was unsettling and I enjoyed it very much. I think this would have to be one of my top reads for this year. We never look at the idea of war as deeply as this book went.
A compelling read. Very interesting narrative and a "fun" way of writing the book pulls you into the story and doesn't let you want to leave until you've finished.

All I have to say is wow… this book was very emotional. It was very good, but I did find myself having trouble reading through only because of the pain and suffering that the main character goes through. My heart felt heavy many times especially since this is the reality of war and even more so in today’s world with the threat of a bigger war. I don’t read many forewords in books (I’m sorry) but I did this one, and I think it’s important. The author of said foreword, Cindy Sheehan, lost a son to war. Throughout reading I kept thinking of her and her perspective of it enhanced the message throughout. I think people who will most connect with this book are those who have gone through similar situations. Or even just those who are sick of innocent people being caught in the crosshairs of leaders who think it’s okay to send their own citizens to fight.
