Someone is trying to kill the MFC
Someone gets shot with an arrow
The MFC gets conked in the head…a lot
Food is poisoned
Drink is drugged
People are trapped in a fire
Hidden passages are used in a nefarious way

Did I miss anything? These are what I have come to believe are the hallmarks of this series and I love it! I feel as though I’ve maybe overused this word for these Highlanders, but it’s bonkers.

This story has forced proximity, amnesia, and fake marriage all in one. It’s not your usual fake marriage trope, though. When Jemma wakes up with amnesia she assumes Aulay is her husband. After all, no proper unwed lady would be in a bed chamber alone with a man who is not her husband, brother, or father. Because of her delicate health at the time, it’s believed it would be best to let her believe they’re married so as not to upset her. Poor Jemma cannot understand why her husband will not fully give in to her advances while she is so attracted to him and he seems attracted to her. Oh! It’s so sweet and tender while also hilarious and horny.

You would think by now this family and their circle of friends would be more in tune with murder plots and sneaky, unhinged people in their midst.

The beginning of the book which centers more on Aulay and Jemma while they are out of the castle and trying to get her better is delightful and full of warm-fuzzies. Once the women of the family hear of the situation and descend on the couple it is chaos and joy. They fully embrace Jemma and are fierce protectors of her. She is instantly taken into the fold.

These stories make me laugh out loud at the outlandish happenings but also make me swoon.

i was actually really excited to read this one. among a whole bunch of reasons i was fascinated with how they were gong to handle a hero filled with so much self loathing. it wasn’t what i had expected. the evil step sister took me out. it was fun. i don’t like how long they lied to her. and the graphic depictions of what happened to the sister was just too traumatic for the overall story. i laughed when i realized it was the evil twin sister, but it was just too much to handle reading what happened to her when most of the story was a sweet romance (with a little bit too much deception).

I was dying for a book about Aulay and it did not disappoint. I wasn’t expecting the mystery to play out like that and it was actually pretty heart breaking. But overall I loved this book. About half way through I felt stupid giddy about the whole gang being present lol. Looking forward to a book about Conran or Rory most now.
