Picked it up from an Amazon sale. A nice respite from more serious sci-fi series and, like other reviews, reminds me of Guardians of the Galaxy. Perfect if you're looking for a fun and humorous plot

This was a really fun little (space) book. It was funny, and not in a forced, trying too hard, way. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and I fell in love with the band of misfit characters, especially Splurt. If you do read this one, be sure to also read the author note at the end.

The humor was very on the head and not subule. Going more for humorous than hard sci-fi.

Fun, fast story. Some good twists along the way. Can't wait to read book 2.

This is just one of those stupid forgettable but fun books.

Basically, you know Guardians of the Galaxy? You know just those bits that are funny? Yep, that is this book pretty much. Does it make a compelling novel? Nah. But does it make me smile? Yeah.

That's this book, a smile. There are other comedic space science fiction books, they are probably better too, but this one? This one was short and funny and I will continue the series.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes Hard Luck Hank, Guardians of the Galaxy, Willful Child, or any other light hearted scifi.

A lot of people are big fans of this book and this series. If it were the right fit, I'm sure I might be one of them. Unfortunately, it's just not for me. When I came across this book, I was buzzing off a high from the ExForce "Skippy" books and reminiscing over the Bobiverse. I had wanted something close to those. For the snark factor, this is reasonably close. The protagonist just isn't there for me. I haven't ready any of the Hitchhiker series of novels, and I believe I would have better understood the tone of this book if I had.

That's not 100% of my reason for the rating. Cal is. I just don't care for his character. I can't connect or sympathize with him. Honestly, I side with the rest of the crew throughout most of the book. He's just annoying. I can kind of accept the 1 in infinity odds of the scenarios he finds himself in (a crime boss across the galaxy knows who the Butcher is? And at 46 (no 48) murders, he's the worst of all cannibals? In the galaxy?). Much of the time, I just want him to shut the fonk up. (we won't talk about my opinions on the curse word censorship). I think if this were told from one of the other character's perspectives, I would have really liked this book.
