Always like a mystery. Unlikeable main character. Easy to write a mystery that starts well. Another thing to land it. Ended up being kind of obvious. Enjoyed the read for the most part though.
Pretty much nothing happens in the first third and it just wasnt feeling worthwhile at that point. The long asides of anodyne characterization and backstory just werent interesting enough to justify the paucity of plot

'In the Woods' was an overall complicated book, which gave me mixed feeling by the end of the novel. Rob Ryan was a selfish, complicated character, who as someone we're meant to connect to and root for, it meant I felt unsatisfied and confused reading. I didn't care for him, I found him rude, selfish, and at times, cruel to his partner, Cassie. By the time the novel was completed, I felt disconnected to Ryan and co, and simply wanted the crime case to be over with. Without mentioning spoilers, even that was unsatisfying!

If this book had been roughly 150 pages shorter, I would have loved it. There was a good chunk of main character self loathing that the book could have done without. But also maybe that’s because I can’t handle men being whiny over the consequences of their own actions.
