I was a little disappointed with this one after loving her last one. I had a hard time empathizing with the main character for some reason.
I feel like I'm missing something because lots of people love this book. I didn't. I finished it because I kept expecting it to get better. I didn't feel attached to the characters- I didn't care for them actually. And I don't like themes of infidelity. I really wanted to like this more!

This book completely undid me. People found Julia unlikable, but at times her dark pragmatism and continually trying to figure out how to ‘play the part’ correctly, felt like a mirror. Her marriage, friendships, and relationships with enemies and children all felt so lived in and real, refusing to gloss over the uncomfortable which was the lynchpin of the relatable. This one will sit with me for a long long time.

I thought this was a beautifully done, character-driven book. I took a couple months to read it, but I honestly think that was a really nice way to experience it. I got to sit with Julia’s character for a long time as I watched her entire life unfold from middle to beginning to end. It’s a big book, but by the end I could’ve happily read 500 more pages. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters and their lives once I got to know them so well.
