I read this book with the movie about to come out. I swear I have read this before but I am either imagining things or I stopped reading it. I enjoyed the book but I have to admit it lessened my desire to see the movie. This book covers quite a lot of the back story of Marcus as he becomes a Navy Seal. Interesting for sure but nothing like what you expect from watching the movie commercial. Certainly an interesting read.
I have to admit I caught the film before I experienced the book. I don't have much to say other than I still enjoyed the story as a glimpse into the lives of these brave men. I think what stands out to me the most is that I recall the stories Marcus shares about all of the others around him more so than just what was going through his mind during these events. Whether that is from his fellow trainees, his enemies, his protectors and his family and the president. I'm sure I'll be visiting this one again in the future.
This book was by far one of the most heartbreaking, gut wrenching stories I have ever read. It opened my eyes to so much. Thank you for your service and your sacrifice Mr. Luttrell. And keep telling your story. So amazing.
This book is a gripping account of what the war is really like for our troops in the field. I cried several times, and felt so proud of all our men and women in uniform.
So good. So emotional. Every American should have to read this book.
DNF pg. 178
I preferred the movie to the book and I rarely if ever say that
If you want to read war stories without the political commentary read In the Company of Heroes about Somalia or Pure Massacre around Rawanda or If I Die in a Combat Zone on Vietnam
He may have lived through things that most of us can not fathom but putting Bush Jr I'm a pedestal vs Clinton was my first hurdle (both are extremely problematic in terms of war for different reasons, neither belong ahead of each other in this way), and I can understand armed forces struggling with rules of engagement (Pure Massacre covers this very well), but when we talk about "liberal" media beating up on the army for embarrassing Afghan and Iraqi civilians there is no point in reading any more. There are so many other books covering brave men (and women in a few) who defend our countries under extremely different circumstances who don't berate the media or the local population. America didn't seem to learn from the Russians or British or Indians in Afghanistan like they didn't from the French in Vietnam and while I believe Marcus is well read and well educated I don't need to read of his political opinions

I feel like this book really increased my patriotism towards my country and appreciation towards our troops and what our country tries to achieve. Absolutely astonishing that Luttrell survived his mission to tell this story and I was quite entranced. It was intriguing to learn more about the terrain of Afganastan and more about the people that inhabit the mountains there. I would recommend this book to all even though the language is a little rough.
