I love books with flawed characters and this is no exception. The writing hooked me from the very beginning and this was such an interesting take on a possible future for America.

Oooh this was good in the most grim, unremitting way possible.

I did struggle with the pacing at the start, but overall this was such an interesting piling on of events. I particularly loved the shifting focus at the end - the conclusion was exactly what I expected and also not at all.

I listened to this on audiobook, and while I thought it was so, so well done I do wish I'd a physical copy of the book so I could flick back between some of the events and documentation as well.

I found the pace of the story moved too slowly and was not as interesting as I was hoping based on the premise. The ending felt a little more redemptive than the rest of the book.

Set in late 21st century US. There is a second civil war, as three states have seceded from the US to from Free Southern States. Depressing but somewhat realistic picture of what a civil war could look like, informed by the author's experiences as a journalist covering afganistan, guantanamo bay & Palestine conflicts.
