There are large sections of the book where the pace sags,  though the last 100 pages are exciting. There are a lot of characters to follow and it can get quite confusing. Some of the characters are somewhat lovable,  but more of them are hateable- which is almost as fun.

It was good but slower paced that Iā€™m used to and did have to drag myself through it to some points. That ending though šŸ‘Œ

George RR Martin crafts an alternate world with detailed cartography, emotions, intelligent world building and a rich lore. It's a mix of multiple genres, thereby making it worth a read for people who read across genres.

The story follows a political conflict across the "Seven Kingdoms" that focuses on the struggle for the Iron Throne, and also the other great houses. In Essos, the story focuses on Daenerys' upcoming fight to reclaim her right to the Iron Throne, bestowed upon by her father. In The Night's Watch in the North, we see a new threat called the "Others" that threaten the lives of people across the Seven Kingdoms and Jon Snow's dilemma between fulfilling his duty for the Night's Watch and fighting his half-brother's war for the independence of the North.

George RR Martin shines with introducing different characters from the POVs of a limited number of characters, making the story interesting. He also shares the history of the realm and integrates it in different conversations between characters.

This book takes its time in setting up the base of the storyline. However, it is worth the set-up once things get going in Westeros. It's a must-read book.
