I watched the TV series before reading the book and I think it made it easier to keep the characters straight. Otherwise I think all the names and people could be overwhelming to keep track of while understanding the world.

What can I say that hasn't been said about this book already? I normally don't like books that focus almost exclusively on political intrigue, but R.R. Martin is a master at what he does. The world building and character development are excellent.
