... i'm not okay

The Magic Mountain is a book that has everything: Love, Life, Illness Death and Philosophy, lots of philosophy. The reason I didn't give it 4 or 5 stars is because I had to force myself to keep reading at times. I thoroughly enjoyed some sections, others, particularly the romance, was quite silly, others quite boring. I have read that one should read this book more than once to really understand it and maybe one day I will.

Definitely Thomas Mann's funniest novel, and possibly his saddest as well. For my money his most even to read (a good mix of philosophical digressions, beautiful character moments, and plot advancement - I find his novels usually front and end load the latter two and this was a compelling mix!)
Took me 3 months longer than planned because I had to take a very very long break after having my heart shattered by the pencil borrowing scene halfway through.

Amazing, amazing, amazing. So much to think about--the reflections on time and on the nature of meaning will take a while to sink in, but I cannot express how much I loved this book. Definitely enjoyed it more than Death In Venice, although that one is lovely too! Can't wait to read Buddenbrooks soon :)

A huge codex of human sickness, drama and dreams.
A terrifying Davosian blueprint for the world of today, and of other worlds which existed since 1924.
Thomas Mann's clairvoyance is unsettling.
May be the greatest of them all.
