I've just finished this book and I'm absolutely in love with Anne Shirley. Her vivid imagination leads to such fun adventures, and sometimes to "a catastrophe" along the way. Anne reminds me of a character whose books I read in grade school. Her love of life and her wild imaginings remind me of Pippi Longstalking. Did anyone else read those books? And Pippi also had red hair!!

I didn’t read this book as a young girl but only now, as an older woman. I think I would have liked Anne of Green Gables even more if I HAD read it some 60 years ago. I would have been less cynical about Anne always being the very best one. Still, I very much enjoyed this book.

I've read this book aloud to several people in my lifetime because I think it lends something to it by reading it breathlessly and full of romance rather than reading word by word yourself. That might be a byproduct of having seen the Canadian mini series first though! The prose is drawn out and ridiculous but that is what makes the book charming. It is within the character and not something the author has all characters do as a matter of writing style. The names in this book STICK with you. They permeate your soul. It's like 5th grade. When you only ever say a persons FULL name. You don't say Timmy threw a ball at Susan. You say Timmy Holowitz threw the ball at Susan Camper and Anne Shirley turns into someone you...once knew.
