This book is captivating and horrific, but also a quick read. A tale that hooked me from page one and my attention really didn’t falter. The ending surprised me, shook me deep with emotion, and made me want to look up the true events this story is loosely based on.

I can’t wait to read more Colson Whitehead. No wonder he’s been making every list and winning every prize. The writing is beautiful, the story flows, and the topics, albeit heavy, are important and do not feel overdone.

Wow, this is a talented author. The seamless time jumps, the tricks in the writing. The content is hard to read but the writing is incredibly readable you can’t look away. Gut wrenching.

Part of my reading goal for February was to read for Black History Month and focus on books by Black authors on my shelves. This one truly hit the nail on the head.

The reality this novel was based off of was new to me. With everything that happened in southern US a century ago, I also wasn't surprised. This book taught me so much, but I still have so much left to learn.

This novel was short, but packed quite a punch. It was dense and heavy, but Whitehead's writing was so masterful.

I think this is another essential read and I think it would be great on the screen. It it very deserving of the prizes, awards and acknowledgements it has been given.
