Well this is a book without joy.

I read Wuthering Heights because it's Victober (I start early) and it's a classic that is perhaps de rigueur.

It does stir emotions, it does make the reader think.   That's my highest praise. And a strain at that.  I've read a little criticism of the book, but none of it has much value to me.  The thoughts I have are these:

Wealthy people live in bubbles that encourage willfulness and entitlement.  The world is perceived as serving them; obligation to the safety, security and emotional welfare of others is not their concern. Selfishness pervades their world view.

My idea of maturity has always featured the ability to master disappointment.  Those who cannot learn resilience and determine to use their power to inflict suffering on others are the most childish among us.

The wounds of childhood are formative.  We spend the remainder of our lives conquering our childhoods.

Wuthering Heights is not a love story.  It is the story of a dysfunctional family.

There is something about class being explored here, but I can't put my finger on it yet.  The servants are as disturbing as the upper class they serve;  their behavior is no better.  What point is Bronte making?

This is not a book one enjoys reading.  I was kept distant from the characters; but I was expecting that.  It's simply a box to check.

May she wake in torment!

Oh, how I dearly love this book. The beautiful lines, the vivid atmosphere, the nightmarish characters, the raw emotions, the snarky humour, the love. THE LOVE!!

I don't care how rotten the characters are, Wuthering Heights is a love story. Cathy and Heathcliff's love for each other ran so deep, it bled through the next generation. Sure, it isn't something you would think "oh that's goals" because of its toxicity but it is very much a love story.

Losing her and seeing her everywhere? Haunting him after her death? That's true love.

Also shoutout to the next generation--that so often keeps getting dismissed entirely, especially in adaptations. Their childhood was terrible and horrific in every way, and yet they made the most of it, broke the generational trauma, and changed for the better. It warms my heart whenever I reach the last page.

I looove Emily Brontë, she was such a literary genius. Five stars again and again and again!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I read it in about a day and a half. It's fast paced and dramatic and I really enjoyed the mystery of the first few chapters. I absolutely loved the narrative structure. I would really like to study this book in a class. But it didn't resonant with me on either an intellectual or an emotional level. I probably would have enjoyed it more when I was younger, but given that this was my first time through it often felt bleak for the sake of being bleak and dramatic for the sake of being dramatic. It's a beautiful book and I'm glad people love it but to me it mostly felt like a soap opera and I finished it wondering if I had just missed the substance or if substance just wasn't there.
