Not for me but interesting anyway
Likable, but not my favorite Marquez by a long shot.
There are some really nice bits of descriptive text in here, such as;
"But in the afternoons of my final old age no one remembered the immortal Castorina, dead for who knows how long, who had risen from the miserable corners of the river docks to the sacred throne of elder madam, wearing a pirate's patch over the eye she lost in a tavern brawl. Her last steady stud, a fortunate black from Camaguey called Jonas the Galley Slave, had been one of the great trumpet players in Havana until he lost his entire smile in a catastrophic train collision. "
So...yeah. Things are a bit over the top at times. It's a quick and nice read, but still brings back more memories of the pleasure of reading 100 Years than it provides on its own.

I can't escape the comparsion between this and Nabokov's Lolita, but I found myself more immersed in this sad tale of love. We follow an old man who's infatutaed by a virgin girl at one of the whorehouses, and he idolizes her to the point that he doesn't allow herself a lot of things with her.
the way he writes about the mc's lonely daily life makes me ache for him despite his pervert pedophilic nature, which is an amazing feat for a writer.

I get that this is supposed to be a love story but the whole concept of a 90 year old falling in love with a 14 year old is just so gross. I couldn’t get over his obsession over a literal child. One star for content, but I’ll give it one extra star for quality of the writing.
I sat on the beach and read this book today. It's short enough and engaging enough that it's the perfect beach book. I loved it. Garcia Marquez is one of my favorite authors though so I'm not surprised I loved this new book. His characters make me laugh and fall in love with each of them. Their humanity rings so true. Tenderness runs through each line of this book.
