Throughout the book, I was trying not to look for, but to see actors as mere symbols of something that transcends beyond the written text. I was trying to notice philosophical hints towards ideas like love, morality, etc. But honestly, sometimes it’s hard. It was a very dissatisfactory read for many reasons.
First, I think it’s a wrong presumption that following a non-conventional storyline will inherently associate deeper meanings with actions. For instance, picking a 90-year-old man falling in love with a 14-year-old, almost represented as a poor, helpless corpse, makes me wonder: why is breaking social norms often the go-to scheme for exploring the depths of human nature?
Second, because of the short length of the book, the characters’ behavior and their reactions lacked compelling explanations. This made the events feel arbitrarily scattered rather than part of a consolidated storyline.
Third, I had absolutely no lingering thoughts after finishing the book, except for feeling slightly irritated.
All in all, it does touch on crucial questions like perceptions of age and the complexities of adapting the inner self to outer norms. It also hints at themes like deepening loneliness due to societal structures—or maybe even unresolved parental issues. However, these themes are commonly explored in other works, and often in much better ways.
Ultimately, I don’t see the point of reading this book, and it honestly creeped me out.
