I started watching the television show and thought I would check out the book. The TV show is sometimes hard to watch, but reading about the losses some women face, is much more powerful and upsetting. For this reason, I abandoned the book.

I wouldn’t have liked this book had I not seen the show. The writing style wasn’t for me, and I didn’t love the pacing of the story. The book kept me interesting though and I did really enjoy reading about the characters and stories from the show, so I will probably read the rest of the series

I had no idea that the TV show was so true to life. I figured the writers probably made things way more dramatic than they really were, but it seems that, if anything, the show is probably playing things down, not up.

I’ve loved the BBC Call the Midwife for a long time, and was excited to read the memoir many of their plot lines are based on. As I read this, I found that it was so similar that I felt I’d read it before (but had just seen the episode inspired by the chapter). There are little changes to the events in the show, but I think this is a rare case where I enjoy the show more than the book. I know it’s fictionalized, but the characters make that show, and they adjusted things to highlight each character, where (understandably) Jennifer Worths memoir focuses mainly on her own perspective. Unfortunately, I’ve never really found the character of Jenny Lee (on Call the Midwife BBC) to be very sympathetic or likeable… and this impression didn’t change after reading her stories in her own words.

This book was full of sensitive reflections and life lessons that Jenny Worth learned when she was a midwife in England in the 1950s, 1960s, & 1970s. It was heartfelt and moving. And yes, much like the show, I did cry a few times!
