And thus ends the first Superintendent Battle novel where the main character is not him.
The star of this show is Anthony Cade and his sidekick funny Virginia Revel.
It's one of the first books published by Dame Agatha Christie. You know who she is. We are talking about the most translated author, one of the best selling authors of all time, And then there was none was sold more than 100 million copies. Don't know if you know but the first book published was Poirot, then she went to Tommy and Tuppence , back to Hercule Poirot, Colonel Race followed and then this one. After this it was mostly Poirot, Marple & of and about Battle. IF not mistaken there are 5 novels by Battle. One I Already read which was Cards in the Table (Poirot stuff), then you've got him in a Cameo in Murder is Easy. So still 2 to go.
I always enjoyed her novels, I think the only one I coudln't finish was Brown Suit something. Everything else was Ok to Excelent. Two of them are among my favourite (Murder of Roger Ackroyd & And then there were none). Murder in the Orient Express is probably her most know and I do love it and probably it closes my top 3.
This one we follow Anthony Cade which is tasked to go from South Africa to UK to deliver a manuscript by someone who will uproar the small and fictional country called Herzoslovakia (wonder which one is based on). Since he always short on money he accepts and travels to UK and from that moment on is a thriller ride. Is more of a treasure hunt than a mystery. There are some really interesting character (Cade being one) and also Virginia Revel. There are also a bunch of people in Chimmeys like Lord Clement, Lady Bundle Brendt, Mr Fish, among other characters.
I really enjoy Virginia. Bear in mind that this book was written in 1925 and Agatha was a forerunner of emancipation of women. But not like nowadays where the hardcore feminists don't want equal rights, they want MORE rights. No no, back then they want to do the same thing as man did. EQUALS!
I really enjoy the story, although was a bit easier to discover apart from the real identity of one of the characters.
This book was written again, in 1925 and there is a small passage that would abhor nowadays readers and I would pay to watch their reactions. Its in the end and and one character which I am not going to say who is telling that he is already married
"Merciful god in heaven! You married a black woman in africa!"
"Easy, easy, it's not as bad as that - she is white, all too white, from head to toes"
(it may not be totally like this in English because I read the Portuguese version)
So funny, it didn't age well, did it?
In the end, surprised, loved the thriller. It's not Poirot. 81/100

Warto poświęcić jej jeden, góra dwa dni. Książka przypomina raczej scenariusz do gry planszowej, jest świetną rozrywką, ale przypomina raczej literaturę dla dzieci.

I did not feel invested in the story or the characters. The author also seemed to struggle with her internalized biases in a way that I personally find a bit too distracting.
