Das zweite Buch der Sherlock Holmes Reihe konzentriert sich auf das Mysterium um einen Agraschatz. Durch die Klientin Mary Morstan erfahren Holmes und Watson, dass Jahre zuvor dieser Schatz aufgeteilt wurde. Nun passieren rätselhafte Morde an den Mitverschwörern. Was es mit dem Schatz auf sich hat, wer der Mörder ist und was das mit dem 'Zeichen der Vier' zu tun hat, das es gilt aufgelöst zu werden.
Die Art, wie Holmes seine Fälle löst, ist und bleibt faszinierend. Es ist interessant mitzuverfolgen wie sich der Fall Stück für Stück aufklärt und die Hintergründe der Taten zum Vorschein kommen. Am Ende erklärt der Täter, wie im ersten Band auch, selbst, wie alles zustande gekommen ist und warum er die Tat begangen hat.
Von Holmes entdeckt der Leser auch eine dunkle und launische Seite, die die Schattenseiten seines Talents, seiner besonderen Klugheit, hervorheben. Watson, der der eigentlich Protagonist der Geschichte ist, erhält auch einen etwas größeren Part. Seine Interaktionen mit Frau Morstan waren sehr erfrischend.
FAZIT
Das Zeichen der Vier beschäftigt sich als zweiter Band der Reihe mit einem sehr verstrickten Fall. Auch, wenn er vielleicht nichts besonderes sein mag, ist es doch die Art und Weise, wie Sherlock Holmes in aufklärt, die sehr unterhaltsam ist.

hm. not your best artie.... mary was cool though i like how she went to meet a detective to help solve a mystery about hidden treasure and then ultimately decided she didn't give a fuck about the hidden treasure and she'd rather just marry the detective's weird old doctor roommate. ok girl... not what i would have done but to each their own...
also i don't want to be mean but i was not a fan of the audiobook narrator... especially his Woman Voice... they have got to let an american do a sherlock holmes audiobook someday i cannot listen to british people talk that much!!

not gonna lie, i was vastly dissapointed in this one. maybe i was supposed to read it in order, but i would’ve hated it anyway. it was very boring and i couldnt help but ‘
The story narrated by Conan Doyle in The Sign of the Four proved to be more interesting than its predecessor. Reading A Study in Scarlet felt like the ending came too fast. In this case, it felt the exact opposite. In some situations, such as the suspect’s pursuit, having access only to Dr Watson’s perspective made it dull.
The mystery was appealing, even if the criminal’s motivations weren’t clear to me. Additionally, the fact that the author used retrospectives to reveal details from the crime seemed better in the text this time.
Lastly, even as background to all the adventures and mysteries that go on, the personal stories of Sherlock and Watson started to gain shape. On the one hand, we have access to Sherlock’s addictions and mental health problems. On the other, Watson’s future wife makes her first appearance in this novel. When it comes to this love story, all I can say is there’s something special about how less than 24 hours and a few glances were enough to fall in love…
