While not necessarily a bad novel, as it still has Doyle's classic characters in it, this has to be one of the most convoluted, boring Sherlock Holmes books. The usual twists and turns just aren't there for most of the book, although there is at least some character development throughout that is always appreciated when reading a longer series of books.

Much better pacing, and I have a lot of love for Mary Morstan, but my god. The literally everything about Johnathan Small’s accomplice, Tonga. I’m really only reading it in the first place because I’m going through all of the original canon right now, but oof it was rough to get through. Bummer because there’s lots of elements and moments in the story I do really love in terms of Watson and Sherlock’s shenanigans.

Last year I read the first Sherlock Holmes book, A Study In Scarlet, and was really impressed. I was kind of disturbed by the second half with the creepy Mormons, but overall I really loved Doyle’s style and have been itching for more Sherlock. I also enjoyed seeing how the BBC Sherlock TV series draws inspiration from and twists the original stories, and wanted to read more before checking out more of the episodes.

Overall The Sign of Four does not disappoint. Very accessible and fast paced. Once I started reading it, I couldn’t stop. The story is about a lady who comes to visit Sherlock and Watson with a strange mystery. Her father has disappeared several years ago and a mysterious anonymous query appeared in the newspaper. She answered the query, and ever since she has received a pearl in the mail once a year.

As usual, this story is filled with twists and turns and Sherlockian hijinks with stolen treasure and pirates. I was truly surprised by the ending, although I felt like I should’ve seen it coming. I’m also not a fan of romance, but I thought Watson was adorable. Overall a fun read with amazing characters and a great mystery. Can’t wait to read more
