One of my favorite books, have reread twice I think. I discovered interesting parallels with The Great Influenza, about the 1918 flu pandemic, which I finished recently. The state of medicine in the 19th century and the way Britain lagged behind France and Germany in the application of science to medical treatment are an important part of the story in regards to the character of Dr. Lydgate.
Every page has some beautifully stated observation about human nature worthy of embroidery on a sampler or listing in a book of aphorisms. One interesting thing I observed in this reading was the prevalence of "nervous illness" in those days. Various characters are aflutter at some point due to a stressful happening and are taken to their beds in need of medical attention.

I picked Middlemarch up because it was described in the WSJ as perhaps the greatest English novel. I'm not so well read as to have an informed opinion of the greatest English novel, but certainly would not argue against Middlemarch.

I am so surprised by how much I loved this book. There were a lot of characters to keep straight, but by the middle I was so caught up in their stories that I couldn't stop reading because I needed to find out how everything would end for them. This book was amazing!
