Absolutely one of the best books I've ever read.

4.5

I was so torn between giving this a 4 or a 5 star because this book, truly, engrossed me by the end. Eliot could have leaned more into the role of the narrator as historian/direct recounter (much like Woolf did in Jacob’s Room), but that style came after Eliot was active… so she gets a pass. Overall, a great book of politics merged with romance merged with drama, a combination I wasn’t expecting to get into at first but which pleasantly surprised me by the end.

"It is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view."

I read this book together with @blogliteraturese and 435 others! This enriched my experience with the book & kept me in check with the reading goals for 2 months. What a journey! I haven't read a classic nor such a big book in quite a long time... that will change now, I had the best time.

Eliot wrote this book in 1871 but the characters are so modern, so personable... Coming from a provincial life background, I can so relate to many of the characters - they're hopeful, driven and oh, so flawed!

The work with such a fun and cheeky narrator is something I don't remember having had contact with before. There's so much to digest, to laugh, to feel sorry for... highly recommend, don't get disheartened by its size, it's worth the work ❤️ lots of plot twists, well built characters, themes that are modern and exciting to read about.
