Overall I liked this book. My favorite part was the characters development in every person we read about. It was very fun to love their life with them and see exactly how experiences change their countenance and actions and character. Very interesting to read how situations changed people and put them in positions they couldn’t avoid. Reading how Lydgate changed throughout his debt was very interesting- particularly his gambling feeling (was once against it and thought he was superior and then he succumbed to its appeal).
Loved how the marriages were never as they seemed and really changed all parties in them.
I also loved Bulstrode’s position at the end- rationalizing his shadiness by acting “for the good of god” was so interesting. People can convince themselves of anything.
The role of gossip was good- I liked the point where even if Lydgate went to court to defend himself, the stain of gossip would still be there.
I liked Dorthea’s progression and how she came more into herself after her first marriage. She was the strongest female character. Rosamond was wild. Impossible to be married to her she was so stubborn. Would not want to be married to Lydgate either.
All the above is why I liked it.
It was so long. I get that the point and I do feel like I loved their lives with them but damn it was LONG.
A lot of details abt politics and religion of the time that were lost on me and made the book feel tedious at times. I do not understand the nuance of those subjects on that time period and that definitely showed when I was reading it.
I also did not walk away with any super strong feelings. Frustrating after committing months to a book.

IMMANENCE IMMANENCE IMMANENCE

I chuckled my way through this but probably still missed 80% of the jokes. A delightful study of provincial life that managed to still leave me stressed out on behalf of the relationships and financial woes. A bit of a chore to read straight through but probably better in its original serial form.
