slow-paced

Its hard to get into at the beginning because Eliot rants about a lot of things that seem irrelevant at times, but once the story starts picking up and you get to know that characters you become interested. This story have two plots, political/social criticism side and the love triangles and everyday life of the people inhabiting this flawed society, i didnt enjoy the political as much because it was confusing at times but Eliot did not paint a pretty picture of this society.

It was good mostly and I’m glad I’ve read it but the male hero was lacklustre and the female hero arrogant. Rosamund was insufferable. I don’t gel much with Victorian literature apart from Wilkie Collins, and this, known as the greatest Victorian novel has not changed that for me.

I have no words, only goosebumps.

A great book, full of vivid characters. It takes some time to get into but is well worth it, as everything comes together by the end.

Giving this four stars not because I loved it, but because the writing was excellent and I feel like I would have appreciated it a lot more if I'd read it in school (with a teacher providing context/historical background). There were some individual storylines that I enjoyed, eg, Dorothea and Will's, but otherwise I wasn't super invested in the characters or the plot, and I didn't understand most of the political discussion in the background. Which is obviously on me and not the author, but oh well. I'll stick to Jane Austen.

Elliot just rekindled my appetite for reading that I have been longing desperately for the last 6 months or so. It won't be the same as before, nothing will. But the joy from all the gossips, drama, and yearnings from Middlemarch I got was something that I will keep with myself forever.
FINALLY, finished it. But now I wish I hadn't

PS: From now on I will be using asterisks (/*****) to rate books that I conclude to be below 5-star ratings. Many people get discouraged to read something by solely looking at the avg. ratings on this hell of a website. I have been guilty of it in the past. And eventually will try to quit Goodreads (inshallah) when I find an alternative way to curate my booklist.

Honestly, I think this is the longest book I’ve ever read but it wasn’t the longest time I took to read a book. It does start out a bit slow but you grow to love and hate the characters which keeps you invested. There are so many complexities in each character and situation, and the development is very satisfying. I thought each love story was an accurate portrayal of the calm and storm that occurs in relationships. Sometimes two personalities clash too much, and it just doesn’t work out but others can overcome their differences in love. It was nice to see everyone get a realistically “happy” ending. There was also multiple times where one character just continues to be annoying/horrible and you finally get that satisfying vindication in the end. I enjoyed it very much!

P.S. My cat’s name is Dorothea (for the Taylor Swift song but still)!
