I enjoyed this book. If you enjoyed the Tatami Galaxy books, then you'll enjoy this one, as it takes place in the same universe. This book is harder on the magical realism than the first Tatami Galaxy book, which makes it a good bridge between the first and second Tatami Galaxy books. In fact, I like to believe this story is another version of the Tatami Galaxy books where he never meets Ozu. It was a fun read, I loved the switching perspectives, and I enjoyed how interconnected the stories were.

The library of Congress entry for this book lists it as a love story, and I suppose that is true. However., much as one of our narrators would like it to be a live story between two people, I would argue it’s a love story to life itself, the vibrant people around us, the life we live together.

This book feels like a warm hug, a platonic snuggle with your dearest friend. It is silly, funny, hopeful, wacky, emotional, and tender. It makes me fall in love with life in a way I haven’t in some time, honestly.

“Maybe this is another one of God’s plot conveniences.”

Set around and within Kyoto University, this is a whimsical book about the various adventures of the titular Girl and her pining upperclassman that often diverge and intertwine with each other brought upon and influenced by a rapid succession of events and the people around them.

I loved reading how their adventures escalate without being too convoluted or confusing: there are callbacks to earlier incidents and characters as you read on and I can’t help but wonder which fantastical journey will the Girl walk into next and how her upperclassman will try to walk along with and get her to notice him with varying degrees of success.

All in all, it’s such a fun and fast-paced read. The cast of interesting and quirky characters against the mundane backdrop of university should be jarring and confusing but it’s easy to just walk along with them and witness how their journeys and connections intersect with each other.

So.. the reason why I scored this book this low is not because it’s not good. The reason is that.. it wasn’t particularly my taste and it was very hard to read. This book has tons of kanjis and N2 grammar structures but what makes it hard to read is that it is kinda abstract. I’ve mentioned before that it reminds me of Bruno Schulz works and what I mean by it is the overwhelming usage of magical realism and abstract concepts to progress the plot. To be honest I wasn’t a fan of Schulz either, this type of writing is just not my cup of tea.
Throughout all of the book author changes the pov pretty much every ~10 pages which is nice, cause we get to know different perspectives but it can be kind of chaotic and I didn’t particularly like any of the characters,,, Which isn’t a problem for me but I just couldn’t make myself care about any of them.
Not to forget that the main male protagonist is just a stalker in my eyes? He’s creepy.
And I do agree that there were some moments that I wasn’t able to fully comprehend (that’s why I give it N1+. My JP teacher also said that this book is hard even for Japanese ppl), I was just too confused.
