Once again a picture book that is classified as JE but isn't really for young children

I love Sidman's poetry. Both the sentiment (a child wishing for a snowy day with their family) and the words are just gorgeous.

It's a pretty poem and I love the illustration style, but the story is weird. It seems selfish to me, and not a good moral to be teaching kids.

True story: my daughter and I read this and within an hour it started snowing. This book is obviously magic.
It's also a little too abstract and flowery for my taste. My kid is still a toddler so she just wanted to look at pictures of snowflakes. She did not follow the story in the pictures about the mom pilot being grounded by the snow. But I really liked the note at the end about invocations and the power of words. This book would be a great writing prompt for students to write their own invocations.
Beth Krommes' illustration style is not my favorite, but I can see how it has appeal. She is a Caldecott winner, so obviously at least 15 people really dig her.

I loved this book. The story is told in the form of an invocation and is paired with absolutely gorgeous scratchboard/watercolor illustrations. The little details and subtle visual storytelling make this a standout.

Beautiful illustrations and a soft, melancholy tone.

Lovely. Sidman's poetry and Krommes' illustrations are a match made in heaven. I definitely want to read this aloud the night before a (possible) snow day! ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

This is not a book to rush through, but rather one to savor. I even went back and re-read The House in the Night to see the progression in the coloring of the scratchboard art. I can't imagine the patience and precision necessary to add the coloration to the illustrations.

This sparse text picture book would make a perfect New Years lesson in a library or classroom setting. Reading it could inspire students to create their own invocations for the new year, or even just celebrate snow more. The illustrations are very intricate, in a etching type style, and tell a story all on their own (independent of the words on the page) which can lead to opportunities for student observation and analysis. Recommend, especially for a classroom setting!
