This is a complex novel set in 1970's India during the Emeregnecy period. i did enjoy the writing and story. However the one thing that did bug me was despite being a novel off over 500 pages, there is a very small cast of characters. Consequently there lives are a misery and tragedy is never far away. I do accept that these events happened at the time, but these poor people really do cop a lot of grief.
Do not read this book if you are depressed!!

You'll be looking for a long long time if you want to find a better book than this one. Superb, excellent and brilliant.
Relentlessly brutal, but oh so beautifully written!
Beautifully written, but left me feeling depressed…. I guess I wanted a more tied up it’s come full circle kind of ending. Sometimes we still need literature to be our departure from the truth and ugliness that can be life.
A Fine Balance between Hope and Despair - ideally that should have been life. Contrary to the appellation, I felt the story of the characters is more about misery, despair and hopelessness. Set in the backdrop of Bombay during the Emergency of 1975, the book brings out the cruel face of India and the practised brutalities of caste discrimination, gender inequality, religious persecution, forced labour, human rights violation, institutional corruption, and whatnot. While we know, India is a land plagued by poverty, disease, corruption and lack of proper education and healthcare, never before this did I realize how dreadful was the Emergency of 1975 - oh the things that were allowed to happen.
This book is an absolute masterpiece.

Incredible writing, but it wasn't smart of me to read this during a lockdown. The story is emotionally intense making it hard to read at times, will have to reread another time to fully appreciate the story.
One of the most amazingly heart-breaking novels I've read. The characters and their stories stay with you long after the last page...
