I have to admit that I did not finish this. I got about half way through and just couldn't stand it any more and had to move on to something else. It was too slow moving and had too weak of a plot. I didn't care about the characters enough to keep reading.

Kind of hard to read sometimes. A lot of suffering.
challenging informative medium-paced

I've read a few novels based in India and they have all highlighted the corruption, poverty and injustices that go on there. This is not a feel good story and I felt it was too long for what it had to say.

This is not a fun book to read, and that is only because it is horribly, horribly sad. I don’t often write reviews, but this book knocked me on my ass until the very end. Beautiful writing, powerful characters. This book shot to the top of my favourites.

This was the first book on India that I read. I now read as many books about India that I can. This opened my eyes to Indian culture.

Absolutely devastating.

utterly depressing, could not keep this in my collection

This book is something else. One hell of a read at 700+ pages, and only about 10 of those pages are not full of misery. At times, I was wondering if this novel was leaning towards "misery porn" with the insurmountable harrowing hurdles all these characters had to jump, but I know Mistry had a larger point. Do not look away from uncomfortable situations, they must be known. This book dives deep into the horrors of 70s India in the midst of The Emergency as it follows 4 people who have been thrown together by circumstance. I cannot recommend this book enough.
