After “A Gentleman in Moscow,” I had high hopes for this short story about the future of genetic testing for IVF. The idea raised is creepy and interesting. But the characters are all unlikable, flat, and it just felt so very male — maybe because not once but twice sperm is described as “the whole kit and caboodle.” Or maybe because the only women in the story were two assistants, both explicitly described as attractive, an absent wife, and a hypothetical girlfriend, also attractive.
David Harbour was a great narrator, and this read like the best of Ray Bradbury or Stephen King short stories. Very strong.

Something about this story really struck me. Its short and definitely has a Twilight Zone feel. Good addition in the series.

I've enjoyed all the stories from the collection Forward so far. This story highlight's Towles' talent, as it is worlds removed from the two novels of his that I've read.
3 stars. Really great writing but wasn't very interesting. There wasn't much to it to me and I didn't feel anything for it one way or another. I think because the two previous short stories were so fantastic that I had gotten my hopes up. Jemisin and Crouch have set the bar for this series and I need to learn to let that go so that I can go into the rest of these with an open mind. 3 stars for the writing though and I wouldn't mind looking more into this author's work.
